    Training a Service Dog
Service dogs have proven their usefulness countless times by saving their owners’ lives. Their effect on veterans is especially valuable. Ohio Congressman Steve Stivers said, “It’s really simple: these service dogs can save lives, they can improve the veterans’ health, lower their incidence of mental health issues, reduce their amount of medication, give them their mobility back, and give them their lives back.”

Stivers is leading an effort in Congress to introduce a pilot program at the VA to get service dogs for disabled veterans who need them.

Until getting a service dog through the VA becomes a reality, veterans might be curious about what it looks like to train a service dog themselves. “How to Train a Service Dog” addresses that and gives background on types of service dogs, eligibility and more.
